Seminarian Scholarship Fund
The PHINMA Foundation’s Seminarian Fund was put up to commemorate the canonization of St. Lorenzo Ruiz, a poor, dedicated missionary priest, who was martyred in Japan. Inspired by his life, the Foundation aims to help seminarians who are preparing for the priesthood in poor dioceses.
- Qualifications of Seminarian Grantees
- Must have completed his philosophy course
- Should have been accepted to do his theology course
- Must be endorsed by the Bishop or the Rector of the Seminary where the applicant is enrolled, to:
- Have a strong spirituality and an explicit intention of continuing on to the priesthood.
- Be physically, intellectually and morally fit to pursue theological studies, and
- Be financially needy. (Please attach income tax returns of all family members contributing for family need

- Letter from applicant requesting for scholarship assistance;
- Endorsement letter from the bishop or seminary rector
- Transcript of records for college studies
- Transcript of grades in theology school (if applicable)
- Photocopy of income tax returns of family members contributing to family needs.

The seminarian scholar will be entitled to a total of PhP 22,500 per school year which will partially cover his schooling and/or lodging requirements.
PHINMA Foundation, Inc. will pay the scholarship amount through check. The check will only be addressed directly to the Seminary/Diocese or the School where the seminarian is enrolled. The check cannot be addressed to the seminarian.
- Renewal of the scholarship
The grantees will be eligible for their scholarships every year provided that they submit the following:
- Transcript of Grades at the end of each year;
- Short write-up at the end of each year; and
- Bishop’s & /or Rector’s endorsement for continuation of support at the end of each school year.
- Duration of scholarship
The scholarship funding shall be available for as long as the grantee is:
- Still in the seminary,
- Continuing his theology education,
- Has not been ordained,
- Continues to submit his grades every year,
- Continues to be recommended by the Bishop and/or Rector of the Seminary every year for the scholarship award, and
- Continues to submit his write-ups every term
The financial assistance will not be given to those who are in their regency year. In the event that a scholarship grantee will have to leave for his residency year, he will have to renew the scholarship once he returns to continue his education.
The Bishop’s Fund
- Who are qualified to apply for the Bishop’s Fund?
- Diocesan priests, after their 5th year of ordination to the priesthood may avail of The Bishop’s Fund provided they are recommended by the Bishops of their dioceses.
- Dioceses and prelatures that qualify for the program are those located in poor missionary areas, lacking of renewal programs for diocesan clergy, and insufficient financial support for the diocesan priests.
- A diocese/prelature shall be entitled to only one grant or grantee in order for The Bishop’s Fund to reach out to as many dioceses/prelature as possible.
- How to Apply for the Bishop’s Fund?
The Bishops of selected dioceses and prelatures may recommend priests whom they deem are prepared for advancement. They should submit the following for each recommendation:
- Accomplished scholarship application form; download here
- CV and present assignment of the sponsored priest
- Program to be attended by the sponsored priest, purpose, duration, location, total cost of the program. (please include course outline and description if available)
- Two recent 2×2 photos
*A diocese / prelature shall be entitled to only one Grant / Grantee per year
- How will the priest know if their application is approved?
Should a priest’s application be approved, the Bishop who recommended him shall be notified by PHINMA Foundation, Inc.
- How much will be provided by the Fund for each grantee?
The Bishop’s Fund will provide 70% of the cost of the program which is chosen by the priest subject to the approval of the Bishop of his diocese/prelature, up to a maximum of fifteen thousand pesos (PhP 15,000) PHINMA Foundation, Inc. will pay the scholarship amount through check. Grants will be sent directly to the Bishop’s concerned.
- Requirements of the scholarship
After the program, the sponsored priest is required to submit a personal evaluation of the course attended, and what he has gained from the course.
